Saudi Arabia Connects 7.8 GWh Grid-Scale Battery Storage Project
Latest company news about Saudi Arabia Connects 7.8 GWh Grid-Scale Battery Storage Project

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — December 2025 — The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has completed the grid connection for a landmark 7.8 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) across three major sites in its southwest, reinforcing its renewable energy infrastructure and grid stability. When fully commissioned, this project is projected to be among the largest battery storage systems in the world.

Project Highlights

The system spans three locations — Najran, Khamis Mushait, and Madaya — each with 2.6 GWh capacity tied into the 380 kV transmission grid.

Owned and operated by Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) with National Grid SA as the offtaker, the BESS integrates high-voltage transformer infrastructure and EPC services provided by Algihaz Holding.

The project draws on a major cell supply deal struck earlier with Sungrow, which underscores accelerated global supply chain collaborations for utility-scale storage.

Why It Matters

This deployment marks a significant step toward Saudi Arabia’s long-term energy strategy — balancing renewable generation with robust storage assets to support grid reliability, peak demand smoothing, and integration of solar and wind power into the national mix.
